  • Signatures of the Invisible

The White Cube Hoxton Square is currently showing ‘Signatures of the Invisible’, an exhibition of new works by Cerith Wyn Evans.

Suspended from the gallery ceiling is a three-dimensional white neon sculpture, invoking the interstitial spaces of the temporal ‘fourth dimension’. The work reflects the artist’s interest in composer John Cage’s chance operations and Brion Gysin’s ‘cut-up’ techniques, as well as particle physics, Albert Hoffmann’s chemical formula for LSD, neural synthesis diagrams and astrological constellations, confounding that which is visible to the eye. The work also represents a sound score. Its title is taken from Wyn Evans’s film Look at Me Your Stars (1988), which featured two visually impaired children. The quoted line is taken from a sequence where a child reads out loud places discovered by chance on the surface of a spinning Braille globe.

Get over to Hoxton square to visit this feast!

  • The idea is mightier than the sword.

A nice sentiment. But let’s face it, it’d have to be a pretty stonking idea for you to bring it out in the height of battle. Because if we’re honest a sword is pretty mighty, an could definitely take your head off. I’m not so sure Maximus Whatever Isis Namus ever felled a Lion with a neat little logo, or if William Wallace ever took on the English with a clever press campaign- “You cannot take our Adverts”.

Can we stop war, terrorism or any pub punch ups without fighting? Stonking Ideas on a postcard please.

  • There’s only one 5th of November, one 5th of November…

Okay there’s two. Us and the day, today in fact. But which is best?

Whilst it’s fair to say that the day the 5th of November has probably been around, in sorts, for a couple of thousand years longer than we have, we’d like to see it try and crack a tricky little design brief or Ad. campaign. And yes, the day the 5th of November has given us such gifts as Brian Adams, Ike Turner and Art Garfunkel, but can you hang Ike Turner on your wall like our poster or send Art Garfunkel to your relatives at Christmas like our PC Xmas cards? We’d like to see you try.

Besides it was also on this day that Robert Maxwell died, so we win.

  • PC Xmas card

53 days left till Xmas. WHSmith have had Mariah Carey on loop for 3 weeks and little children across the land are beginning to come home after a hard days happy slapping to compile their lists for Santa. It’s about time you start thinking about your Xmas cards.

You may think that the list is the hard bit, who to add, who to remove, have they died are they likely to etc. But in today’s climate the real tricky part is not offending anyone. You see not everyone, believe it or not, believes that 2000 years ago on th e 25th of December a young carpenter and his wife gave birth to the son of god in a shed full of animals accompanied by an angel and three clever men bearing gifts and a few bails of hay, without out ever actually having sex. Some people believe in other gods who weren’t part of this story, so who are we to offend them with our so called cards of festive cheer.

Why send cards depicting the English Robin perched on a branch when it could offend people from abroad? Why send cards with the words Happy Christmas when we know some people don’t believe in Christ? Why send cards from the red cross when there are plenty of other respectable and equally important charities out there to support. And why send cards with pictures of doves and rays of light when you know full well they look rubbish.

It is indeed a political minefield. Until now. Introducing the ‘Totally inoffensive, completely Politically Correct Xmas card’
